What is Family Mediation?

Family Mediation applies the basic principles of mediation to the resolution of issues that arise in families. The majority of Family Mediation has tended to focus on separation, divorce, common law unions and custody/parent plans. The major benefit of mediation is it keeps your case out of court thus speeding up the process and decreasing costs drastically. The average divorce in Ontario costs between $15,000 to $30,000 dollars using conventional methods, using mediation will substantially reduce the cost of your separation and divorce and the cost is split by the parties involved.
Intake Process
Mediation is generally less costly than conducting a negotiation through lawyers. First of all the two parties are sharing one mediator’s fee. Secondly, mediation hourly rates are often lower than the rates of lawyers with comparable years’ experience, and the mediation process is often a faster one because the parties are focusing on solving problems rather than building a case against each other. Individual meetings with parties in family mediation cases are charged at a flat rate of one hour’s time, although the meeting usually lasts one to two hours.
There is no charge for introductory telephone calls or for brief telephone calls, brief e-mails, or scheduling appointments during the mediation process. Fees for drafting Memorandums are negotiated at the time of drafting and will vary depending on the length and complexity of the document. The parties are responsible for payment of all fees for necessary experts (such as pension valuators or CGA level accountants for financials if required.
Parties must decide how to share costs of the mediation between them; however, the mediator may require payment in full from either party. There is no cancellation fee provided parties provide 48 hours advance notice. For more information about mediation fees, please contact us by phone, email.

Our rates are simple, we have flat fee service plans* based on the complexity of your case, you can choose from one of three flat fee pricing plans or pay as you go. We also have plans for mediation that are geared to income so if you qualify for Legal Aid you will qualify for our geared to income plan, inquire for details. We offer in-house financing options as well; all of these options are covered in the consultation at no charge.
